This is one of the only two known video recordings of Charlie Parker; the other is a recording of “Hot House” with Dizzy Gillespie. I’ve watched it at least a hundred times, and still no words come to mind.His level of technical virtuosity and creative genius is virtually unparalleled. I love this recording because he’s situated right next to the Coleman Hawkins, the main progenitor of the 1930’s tenor saxophone sound, and one of Parker’s influences. You can even hear the similarities between the two styles, even though Bird is light years ahead of Bean.
But i guess what strikes me more than anything in this video are the last few seconds, when Bird finishes the last song…You can really see the pain in his eyes. It almost makes me cry.
